The Kelab Olahraga Setiawangsa squad together on the pitch at Sky Arena Stadium, juniors and seniors in club kit

Sky Arena Stadium, Air Panas, Setapak — seven days a week, from age seven. Coached by R. Murugan, SEA Games 4×400m relay silver medallist.

Seven days a week, this is what it looks like.

Sprints, distance, field events and recovery, at Sky Arena Stadium.

Coached by a SEA Games medallist.

R. Murugan founded the club and coaches it. At the 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai he ran the second leg of Malaysia’s 4×400m relay, which took silver in 3:08.93.

He is at Sky Arena Stadium seven days a week — sprints, distance, jumps and field, from age seven up. He says an athlete needs two to four years to develop, and that pushing for results sooner is what damages them.

“There are no shortcuts to success.”

A newspaper cutting kept in the album: Malaysia's first runner hands the baton to R. Murugan in the 4×400m relay. The printed caption ends, "The Malaysian quartet won the silver." He has signed across the corner, "Be the best."
A newspaper photograph of R. Murugan with his arms raised after winning a 200m, cut out around his arms with scissors and kept in the album. A pink highlighter marks his name in the caption.
Written across the top of the album page in marker pen: SEA Games 95.
From the coach’s own album. The cutting is the handover into his leg — D. Nadarajan to R. Murugan. The print is the medal ceremony that same day, stamped 15 December 1995. The figure cut out with scissors is a 200m win at a meet the cuttings never name.

“To my mother — for everything you have done for me. Thank you.”

Four disciplines, one squad.

Athletes from age seven, at every level from a first session to a national schools championship. Everyone trains together, in the same sessions.

  • 01

    Track & sprints

Starts, acceleration and speed endurance, through the school age groups and into open age. The club's fastest-growing discipline since 2025.

  • 02

    Endurance & cross country

Middle distance, cross country and race walking. Most of the club's record comes from these events.

  • 03

    Jumps & field events

High jump, long jump and the rest of the field programme, coached as events in their own right — approach, take-off, technique.

    Mobility & recovery

A yoga master works with the squad on breathing, stretching and mental focus. It counts as training, not as an extra.
